Psalm 1:1-3 ESV
Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; [2] but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. [3] He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
This passage shows us the foundation of the blessed life. Blessing does not come from following the world’s counsel but from walking according to God’s law. The man who delights in the law of the Lord and meditates on it day and night is compared to a tree planted by streams of water. Just as a tree rooted by water is nourished, grows strong, and produces fruit in its season, so is the life of the one who remains grounded in God’s law.
Life comes in seasons. There are times of growth, times of waiting, times of pruning, and times of testing. Yet the promise of God remains sure: in the right season, fruit will come. Just as fruit does not ripen overnight, obedience and spiritual maturity also take time. What matters is that we are planted in the right source. If our roots are in the law of the Lord, we will never wither.
The psalm concludes with a powerful promise: “In all that he does, he prospers.” This prosperity is not merely about wealth or outward success. It is the blessing of a life aligned with God’s will. Meditating on His law teaches us humility, faithfulness, patience, and obedience—qualities that reflect His character. As long as we live in His law, we will walk in His prosperity.
